Abstract:

Ronald Reagan's 1981 decision to fire the PATCO strikers merits inclusion in a list of key presidential moments. The decision, which was politically risky, had a number of important consequences. Labor unions were undermined, particularly in the public sector, with significant economic and budgetary consequences; the popular image of the presidency as a center of decisive action was restored; and Soviet and other foreign leaders began forming an opinion of Reagan as a man not given to bluffing.
