Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: There has been a rise over the past decade of so-called “neo-burlesque”. While paying homage to burlesque during its heyday of the early 20th century, neo-burlesque also makes use of performance art, often includes drag kings, and effectively performs a version of hyper-femininity. Theorizing the unique space of neo-burlesque performance calls attention to this form of female/female drag. Neo-burlesque performances and artists can potentially subvert, or “queer” heteronormativity through the process of both performing and tweaking these norms. |
