Abstract:
|
This research focuses on the nature of the relationship between racial identity and academic culture. I analyzed data from the Racial Identity and Academic Culture survey (RIACS) which was sent to all African American faculty in the state of North Carolina employed in four-year, degree granting institutions. Forty-two percent (n = 308) of the total population (n = 751) responded to the survey. Significant research findings reveal that North Carolina’s unique constellation of public and private, PWIs and HBCUs provides an impressive array of variation and diversity, such that important intra racial relationships can be addressed with statistical significance. Findings reveal that racial identity is central to the overall self concept of Black faculty yet a majority of respondents believe that ‘race’ should change (in some manner) and become less important than it is today. The centrality of racial identity and racial ideologies closer to the idea that race should matter; significantly correlate with high levels of critical political engagement. |
